So Why the Big

divide between Europe and the U.S. asks Paul Krugman. Could it be the difference in media?

Could it be? Of course. It's less that European media is more "anti-American," whatever that means. It means we in the United States don't have a free, independent press here anymore. Thanks to the takeover of the media, including and especially broadcast media--which has a far greater impact than print media--by corporate interests, interests that are overwhelmingly right wing (because the right and their Republican minions in Congress and the White House tend to favor deregulation and tax break goodies for them), there's no effective, independent media. Thanks to the gutting the Fairness Doctrine, there's no effective counterpoint to the constant onslaught of nutball rhetoric, rhetoric that has no basis in fact.

That's the difference.
