The Booming Economy

from the perspective of the Pacific Northwest.

We had a lot of the same thing during the Reagan and Bush I eras where professionals were laid off from their high-paid positions and ended working as sales clerks, fast food personnel, and so forth.

As I've said on this blog many times, this is exactly what the Bush people want. Throw out the highly skilled people because they cost too much and force them to take any piece of shit they can get, thus driving the pay even lower.

In a way I am glad I didn't do those high tech jobs making very big bucks. With years of experience working in the lower-prestige data entry occupation, I knew firsthand how vulnerable any kinds of computer work is, especially to foreign competition. There was no way in hell I was going to work as a programmer or anything similar. Of course, I am now at the end of my one-year teaching contract with the local school district, and right now the district is waiting for Carson City in order to come up with a preliminary budget for next year. Even people who are likely slated to have their jobs eliminated but are standard contract and must be placed first haven't been notified.

It'll be one hell of a long goddamned wait. I am applying at the sinkhole Oregon school districts as well, in the off chance I may land something there.
