notes Gray Davis is becoming "Clintonian" in his offensive against the offensive recall. Some people are skeptical because they think S. is such a shoo-in.

That's my interpretation, anyway.

Here is today's editorial from the San Francisco Chronicle about Davis and the rest. The editorial writer wasn't too impressed with Davis's speech (probably because he told the truth), but s/he wasn't impressed with S., either:

"Beyond that, [S.] was not about to box himself in with any commitments about what he would do, if elected. [S.], flanked by Warren Buffett and former Secretary of State George Shultz, was a portrait of confidence in his first encounter with political reporters."

That was merely a right-handed compliment:

"'I have the advantage. I'm not going to Sacramento with any baggage [!],' he said. Unfortunately, [S.] apparently includes 'solutions' to problems in his definition of baggage.

"The Big Two challengers (as measured by the polls) apparently are going to leave it to the trailing 133 candidates to introduce fresh ideas, radical approaches--or a compelling case that voters should abruptly overturn a judgment they made less than a year ago."
