Speaking of Nagourney
he writes in today's NYT about how both political parties are trying to rile up their respective bases in order to facilitate turnout in next year's election.
If the Democrats follow that course to the exclusion of getting the swing voters, they are doomed. The largest chunk of voters are the independents, and they will make or break an election. I don't think for a minute the Republicans are going to go the self-destructive route of what Democrats are proposing (thanks to Dean's campaign, which has riled up a "massive" base of some 200k or 300k or 90k or whatever the campaign claims at the moment it has out of 100 million voters) but will try and go after the mainstream. Either that or they just might pull off another rigging of the vote, this time more sophisticated than the last two elections.
GOTV drives are good, but they aren't the only solution.
