Despite misgivings that she cannot win because of her tarnished reputation, Katherine Harris made it official and announced her bid to run for the Senate seat held by Bill Nelson.

"That kind of mudslinging has been engaged in the past by Republicans, but the mud doesn't stick," Nelson spokesman Dan McLaughlin said. "He, contrary to Harris' assertions, cannot be labeled liberal or conservative because he has consistently advocated for public policy that serves the mainstream of Florida."

Harris also poked fun at her own makeup, offering jokes about wearing blue eye shadow as a teenager and describing her race with Nelson as "eyelash" close.

Rollins, known for his tough political style, later said it is important that Harris can make light of the many barbs she has taken about her appearance. The jokes were started in 2000 when angry Democrats vilified Harris in the belief that she had improperly helped George W. Bush win the disputed 2000 Florida presidential vote count.
