Michael Murphy, the man who died in a fire trying to rescue a cat (which also died), was remembered as somebody who cared deeply about animals and people:

As a child, Murphy and his four siblings always had pets in their home, said Cam Cantrell, a neighbor who has known the family since the early 1960s. Cantrell and Murphy often worked in the community garden.

"He put the cat before his safety. It doesn't tell you he was crazy, it tells you he was compassionate," Cantrell said.

Murphy was also compassionate toward his neighbors as he had frequently driven senior citizens to the grocery store, doctor visits and the like, Ryan said of her brother. However, he was forced to stop a year ago when his license was not renewed because of his poor vision, she said.
