Former President Carter's
latest book is still at the top of the NYT bestseller list for nonfiction.
Jonathan Alter is off the mark reviewing Mary Mapes' book.
It's amazing how credulous mainstream writers are over the utterly bogus attacks against CBS.
Not only that, but Alter is irony-impaired, considering the fact he wrote a review in a paper which has had numerous problems of its own.
The "panel," by the way, didn't even look at the authenticity of the Killian memos, which raises the point as to WHY such a panel was EVER convened in the first place.
Because they weren't forgeries, Mr. Alter. The "investigation" was a classic case of CYA on the part of the network.
The only error CBS made in the memo flap was not making absolutely sure of the authenticity of the memos, but Marian Knox confirmed the content, which rather blows away the objection.
The REAL scandal was how quickly a major television network folded over right-wing pressure.
