to readers about my sparse blogging tonight, but I got paid today. It felt good to finally be making a halfway decent salary and feeling free to spend it.
It's not a huge salary, of course, but a hell of a lot better than taking home $800 or $900 a month. So what I did today was finally get the rest of my pictures processed and buy the Elvis '68 Comeback Special (deluxe edition with all of the outtakes) and the Edward R. Murrow collection of his McCarthy broadcasts and Harvest of Shame (among the DVDs). The Murrow broadcasts were what I was watching. As I have written before, I was either not around or was too young to have seen the shows when they originally aired; I first saw them in 1973 when CBS rebroadcast them the summer of that year.
It's one thing to see a re-enactment of the behind-the-scenes goings-on as in the recent George Clooney film, but it's another to see the original broadcasts. I highly recommend getting them.
Harvest of Shame was a landmark documentary of its time, but all I can say is this country is backsliding to those times if we don't wake the hell up.
Meanwhile, my brother e-mailed me this obituary of the death of Time's Hugh Sidey, a man who always liked to write about the different presidents. I have one of those "special editions" of the magazine that he wrote about our most recent presidents.
I also knew about the death of famed guitarist Link Wray, but I was too lazy to note his death until now.
I will note Tom Shales' obituary of Ted Koppel's network broadcasting career as well.
It also seems (no pun intended) to note the death of Ruth M. Siems, the inventor of Stove Top stuffing.

And Sam, the Chinese crested dog who became a celebrity after being named the "World's Ugliest Dog," was euthanized just before his 15th birthday. His heart was failing.
This is his official website.
