seemed to welcome, or at least tolerate, the religious right because of its support for Israel, but now the unity ain't so unified.

Of course, the religious right never gave a shit about Israel or the Jews; instead, the only reason the movement was interested in the region was because they were hoping for Armageddon and eventually Jesus Christ to arrive. And then, as I remember reading a quote from the 1980 book, Holy Terror, "it's goodbye Jews. We're out of business."
