The Local Paper

announced the winners of its fall photo contest. The winning photograph, which appears at the link, doesn't look very good online. It looks much better in the print edition of the paper.

It is a very good picture, reminding me a bit of the San Francisco Chronicle photographer who got reflections of the Golden Gate Bridge in raindrops on a car windshield. However, I probably wouldn't have picked it if I had been on the panel. I prefer images that are as close to reality, yet showing creativity, than something that has been "enhanced."

This photographer merely enlarged the image, but especially with digital cameras it's much easier for people to engage in fakery. I for one don't care much for the second-place photograph of a double-exposure of some aspens at Tahoe. It doesn't do anything for me. The third-place picture should have won or placed higher. It is the one of a mother bear with a fish in her mouth.
