Ron Franklin, whose sensational rise and fall as jockey of Spectacular Bid has been chronicled on this blog, seeks to have his license reinstated by the Maryland Racing Commission.

I don't know why he bothers at this point. He is 46, way past his prime.

I feel the question we should be asking is why shouldn’t he be allowed to try again? I mean we all make mistakes. He has made mistakes, he has said he has made mistakes, but he continues to try and do better. I feel we sometimes forget to try and imagine how others may be feeling or try to imagine what they may be going through. I feel we are not understanding or compassionate enough at times. I cannot even begin to imagine how difficult a disease such as addiction would be for me to live with each day. Most of us have at least one family member or friend with some type of addiction – be it drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, gambling or shopping, etc. Most of us have seen someone fighting some type of addiction. Addiction is not easy. I feel if Ron is strong enough to still ride physically – why not!? I say GO FOR IT RON!! We have all seen one chapter of his life, we know how that one begins and ends. Why not allow him to continue on with this next chapter? I am looking forward to seeing what happens next. I want the Maryland Racing Commission to give him his jockey’s license back. Let him ride; give him the opportunity to finally show what he can do to put an end to all rumors, gossip, etc. I am a gambler, so I put my money on Ron each and every time. So, I say let him ride! I will be right there waiting and watching for the first race.
