What the abortion issue is all about is the role of women in society. Anti-abortion people, when pressed, will tell you that the most valuable role for women in our society is motherhood, while those who support abortion rights will tell you that women need to have the right to control their fertility in order to engage in other roles outside the home.
It's really cut-and-dried. The status of the fetus is secondary. So is one's religious beliefs.
