In 2006, at the age of 102, Vi became somewhat of a celebrity as she joined seven other survivors at the 100th anniversary of the San Francisco earthquake. She was filmed by the Dateline TV staff and televised on the Today show; she, with the other survivors, threw the first pitch for the opening game of the San Francisco Giants baseball season; her picture was in the New York Times as well as other major news papers; she was honored at the ceremonies in remembrance of the 1906 quake.
