Kentucky Derby winner Winning Colors, only the third filly and the last one to have won the classic race when she won it in 1988, has been euthanized as a result of suffering from colic. She was 23 years old.
Although her wire-to-wire win in the Derby was impressive, to say the least, her greatest race was in the 1988 Breeders' Cup Distaff, one of the greatest races of all time. It appeared she had the race won in the homestretch at Churchill Downs, but four-year-old Personal Ensign nosed her at the wire in literally the last stride to win and retire undefeated.
A great race. Winning Colors will always be remembered.
