Kaye O'Bara, 80, a Florida woman who stayed loyally by her comatose daughter's bedside for 38 years, has died.

The daughter, Edwarda, is still alive, which has to be some kind of world record. The one-time record holder, Elaine Esposito, who went into a coma after having an appendix operation in 1941, died in 1978 after being comatose for 37 years, 111 days.

What a contrast to some who would gleefully kill off their disabled relatives for their own selfish purposes.

Another icon bites the dust:

Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann on "Gilligan's Island," is serving six months' unsupervised probation after allegedly being caught with marijuana in her car.

She was sentenced Feb. 29 to five days in jail, fined $410.50 and placed on probation after pleading guilty to one count of reckless driving.

Under a plea agreement, three misdemeanor counts — driving under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance — were dropped.

You'd think at her age she'd know better.
