While people are still talking about the tragedy at Churchill Downs Saturday, it may be time to reflect on the life of trainer Frank Whiteley, Jr., 93, who died over the weekend.

Whiteley trained the greatest filly in history, Ruffian, who won ten straight races before her untimely death from an injury suffered in a 1975 match race against Foolish Pleasure.

Whiteley also conditioned the great gelding Forego and top racehorse Damascus. But he is best remembered for training Ruffian.

He retired in 1984. As noted in the obituary, Whiteley never allowed any other horse to occupy Ruffian's stall when he had Barn 34 at Belmont.
