Snip:
Nevada cicadas, large insects known for their mating calls, emerge from underground every five to seven years, a shorter period than the more well-known cicadas that plague the Midwest every 17 years, entomologist Jeff Knight said. While cicadas can be found every summer in Nevada, this year will mark a year when several species come out at the same time.
But their appearance shouldn’t worry residents, Knight said.
“Cicadas are big and they’re not pretty to look at, but they’re harmless,” he said. “They don’t bite. They don’t do much, if any, damage. They’re just an annoyance because of the buzzing.”
The cicadas in Northern Nevada, typically dark with clear wings and black veins, tend to stay away from urban areas, showing up in parks and on the outskirts of town, he said.
