In the final analysis, at least in this article, neither side is clean in playing the race card.
The problem is Obama's entire campaign has been based on playing the race card. This is a guy who is totally conflicted and has identity issues. A biracial person who was raised by whites in a privileged environment and possibly resentful as a result has spent his entire adult life trying to pass as a black.
I don't think he has truly succeeded except to inflame passions.

Susan,
Obama owes his so called "victory" to two factors; 1)media adoration 2) race card
The media trashed and ridiculed Edwards and Hillary throughout the primaries and declared Obama a Messiah.
He used the race card throughout the primaries by portraying the Clintons as racists. It helped him win the African American and white-guilt liberal votes.
General election is a different ballgame. If he pulls that stunt it will blow up in his face.
You nailed it as always, Mary Louise. Obama did the Johnnie Cochran routine, playing the race card from the bottom of the deck, and so far he has succeeded.
Say what you want about McCain. He has never used racism for political gain. He has no history of that. Jokes yes. But that is different from using racism as a political strategy.
Reagan did it. He used racist code words as a deliberate strategy. Remember welfare queens? states rights?
I have not seen McCain do that.
McCain has actually borrowed a lot of the unity and working-across-the-aisle message Obama preaches about. You can watch the video I have to his town hall from last Tuesday. He was constantly talking about getting past partisanship.
No, he hasn't used the race card as of yet. I don't think he has to. Obama is shooting himself in the ass all by himself playing racial politics.
