Of course there are different levels of "affluence" or being "rich," but really and truly, if one has to depend on wages, salary, or pensions in order to live (unless one is in the elite category of being an entertainer or CEO/executive of some sort), he or she cannot be considered truly rich.
In other words, if unearned or investment income affords one to live a life where there are no financial worries, then one is rich.
