God, I had forgotten about this. What a terrible film. Nobody could sing. Peter O'Toole hits the high note in "Impossible Dream," but I suspect that there was some Marni Nixoning going on behind the scenes.
Just look at these excerpts! This is TERRIBLE direction. The staging of "Impossible Dream" is laughable. Look at the way the scene is blocked, with O'Toole just standing there doing NOTHING and the camera zooming in and out of the same dull shot. In or out, that shot remains poorly composed.
Every time I see a major Hollywood film from this era -- the period between "Patton" and "Jaws" -- I think the same thought: It's as though everyone in town forgot how to make a damn movie.
Sophia Loren sure was pretty, though.
Supposedly O'Toole had his voice dubbed, according to Wikipedia, which makes me wonder just how terrible he was, for the person dubbing it certainly couldn't sing.
Neither could Sophia Loren, but yeah, she looked good.
