I could have brought my video camera, but I didn't do it. I should have, for I would have likely have gotten good shots of him. The trouble was where I was standing, the TelePrompTer was in the way much of the time. Then there were people with kids on their shoulders, other people who were six-feet-eight who don't have enough sense to get in the back, and still others who were wearing hats and were in the way. Therefore, in an unusual circumstance, I don't have any Obama pictures to upload except for one.
After he spoke, I did get close enough to him to be just two or three feet away, and he missed shaking my hand. And damn it, I didn't think to bring one of the books he wrote with me, for he did take the time out afterwards to sign books. Books HE has written are the only items he will sign at rallies, for the most part (there are exceptions once in a while).
I really believe, though, the organizers should have held the rally at Lawlor Events Center just as Kerry's was held there in 2004. There were simply too many people at the Quad today for most of them to see him clearly. Everybody would have been able to easily see him if they had done so.
A estimated 10,000 people were at the rally. I believe it. When I got there, just before 8 a.m. (Obama spoke on time at 10), I was already a couple of thousand up the line. I was one of the lucky ones, for when I moved up further to the Quad, I turned around and saw THOUSANDS of people who were behind me.
And the vendors were busy. It almost looked like a carnival midway, with towels, t-shirts, hats, and, of course, political buttons for sale all over the UNR campus. I picked up a dozen buttons (although I know I have ordered all of the jugate buttons I bought today).
This was the only picture I could get of him. Frankly, I am shocked it turned out as well as it did:
Here are the dozen buttons (eleven to be exact) I picked up today to add to my collection of a couple of hundred from Campaign 2008 alone:
