I might be a tad premature to say the McCain campaign is deliberately avoiding slinging dirt; there is the ad about Obama and sex education, which is misleading, to say the least.
Krugman documents other whoppers from the campaign; however, he doesn't touch the obvious ones from the Obama campaign.

Sean Hannity on his daily radio show detailed how an "age appropriate" sex education syllabus was slipped in with the legislation teaching children about child predators; graphic details had been added to this bill, such as details concerning masturbation, what feels good when it's touched, and introductions to homosexual relationships, which most parents would surely not happy with.
John McCain's ad is not as misleading as you might think.
