The Mystery of Steve Fossett [Updated]

Police confirm the plane they spotted late yesterday was indeed that of Steve Fossett. It was found in the Mammoth Lakes area.

The aircraft spotted Wednesday night in the Sierra near Mammoth Lakes was that piloted by Steve Fossett when he took off Sept. 3, 2007, from a private airstrip near Yerington, authorities confirmed.

Madera County Sheriff John Anderson confirmed it was the wreckage this morning.

A plane from Yosemite National park spotted the wreckage Wednesday night abouit 7 p.m. and a search team cnofirmed the N number on the plane, Anderson said. There were no human remains found.

"I've seen photos. The crash looked so severe, I doubt if someone could have walked away from it," Anderson said.


The search resumed today, although the weather will likely get bad before long.
