The Mystery of Steve Fossett [Updated]

It appears the mystery of what happened to adventurer Steve Fossett is close to being solved:

A hiker in rugged eastern California found items possibly belonging to adventurer Steve Fossett, who vanished on a solo flight more than a year ago, authorities said Wednesday.

“We have some ID that has the name Steve Fossett,” Mammoth Lakes police Investigator Crystal Schafer said. “They were turned in to us and are in our possession.”

A Federal Aviation Administration identity card, a pilot ID and about $1000 in cash were found in a bush in the vicinity of the town of Mammoth Lakes, according to David Baumwohl, an attorney for the hiker who recovered the items.

Preston Morrow, who works in a Mammoth Lakes sporting goods store, took them came to the Mammoth Lakes Police Department office Wednesday, Baumwohl said.

It is obvious Fossett died. Only the mountain lions, bears, and buzzards in the Mammoth Lakes area know for sure, and they aren't talking.

Meanwhile, the family is awaiting official confirmation.

More here.

Update: Three counties have resumed the search.
