Simpson, 61, faces life in prison after his conviction Oct. 3 for kidnapping and armed robbery, among other charges. The Heisman Trophy winner and NFL Hall of Fame running back is being held at the Clark County Detention Center as inmate No. 02648927. His only "contact visits" have been with defense attorneys Yale Galanter and Gabriel Grasso, who are planning to appeal.
I wonder if he will be incarcerated at Ely State Prison. That's the roughest of the prisons in Nevada and home to convicted killer Darren Mack. Interestingly enough, while all of the death row inmates in Nevada are at Ely, executions take place at the Nevada State Prison in Carson City.
His lawyer is hoping (probably engaging in wishful thinking) his client will get a fairly light sentence and hopes Simpson will be incarcerated in a medium-security prison like Southern Nevada Correctional Center or High Desert State Prison in Indian Springs, both close to Las Vegas. My family and I drove past the latter facilities on the way to Las Vegas on Highway 95 in 2007. That could happen, and normally this would happen. But in O.J.'s case, given the fact almost every sane person in the country believes he committed a double murder back in 1994, I would think it would be extremely reckless to place him in a facility where he would be easily injured or killed by inmates although the article mentions he is currently in protected custody and would remain so regardless of where he ends up.
In the meantime, I am spending my days reading, trying to apply for jobs online, and watching the second season DVD set of one of my all-time favorite shows, Route 66.
