A body found in a makeshift coffin behind a false wall in a Berkeley apartment building was identified today as the son of a 60-year-old man who shot and killed himself two days earlier.
Taruk Benali is believed to have died accidentally in 2004 at the age of 36 as a result of a drug overdose, sources close to the investigation said. Police believe his father, Hassan Bin Ali, 61, then stuffed his son's body into a makeshift coffin and hid it in a common area on the first floor of an apartment complex at 2235 Ashby Ave.
Benali had owned the property, and police believe Bin Ali hid his son's body to continue collecting rent, sources said. A tenant of the building has told The Chronicle that in recent years he had been paying rent to Bin Ali, who said he was collecting on behalf of his son.
