Probably everybody has had to read at least one of these books on the list of books not to read before one dies.
I read this article back in September but apparently never linked it on this blog. Here is the condensed list made up mostly of so-called classics:
1: Pride and Prejudice – Jane Austen
2: The Iliad -- Homer
3: War and Peace – Leo Tolstoy
4: The Beauty Myth – Naomi Wolff
5: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas – Hunter S Thompson
6: The Dice Man – Luke Reinhart
7: À la Recherche du Temps Perdu – Marcel Proust
8: For Whom the Bell Tolls – Ernest Hemingway
9: Lord of the Rings – J R R Tolkien
10: Ulysses – James Joyce
I don't know how anybody could possibly leave a Charles Dickens book off the list. I am thinking of Great Expectations, which was a great bore to me. Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness is another legendary stinker which made me swear off novels. I seldom read fiction, and I attribute that directly to having to read shit like the two books mentioned in high school and college.
