The job listings, whether in the traditional paper or online, are a joke. There are gimmicks for "work-at-home" scams, medical jobs which of course have terrible working conditions, sales jobs (including call center jobs) paying barely more than the minimum wage and less than employment benefits, and a few jobs which require people to have all of this experience but with few locals having the "skills" required.
It's a total joke, but there is no indication our elected officials in Washington have a goddamned clue what to do about rising unemployment all over the United States. Those who still have jobs are worried about the economy, so THEY don't spend money, and still MORE people are unemployed as a result of a lack of demand.
A snip from the sidebar:
Roland Graham, 30, has been looking for work for a couple of months. He scanned the computer at Nevada JobConnect on Friday in a process that has yet to pay off.
“I’ve sent off probably 300 applications, and I’ve not had one call back,” Graham said. “I’m looking for any kind of work.”
Worried that he was somehow messing up sending applications electronically, he followed up by phone regarding one potential job in apartment maintenance.
He was told his application had arrived just fine. And that it was one of 1,000 submitted in a day.
He didn’t get the job.
A thousand applicants for a job likely to pay little more than minimum wage. Pathetic.
