Phil Spector Trial [Updated]

A verdict is expected at 1:30 today in the second trial of the one-time record producer and accused killer of Lana Clarkson.

The jury deliberated for 32 hours.

It took forever for the jury to announce, so I went out on my run. When I returned a few seconds ago, I was pleasantly surprised to read the jury found Spector guilty:

Phil Spector has been convicted of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of actress Lana Clarkson six years ago. An L.A. Superior Court jury reached its decision against the legendary music producer after nine days of deliberations. An earlier jury deadlocked 10-2 in favor of guilt.

The decision means the 69-year-old Spector, famed for his work with musical acts such as Tina Turner, the Beatles and the Righteous Brothers, faces at least 18 years in prison when he is sentenced. The jury determined that Spector killed Lana Clarkson, a statuesque blond actress, on Feb. 3, 2003, just hours after they met in the Sunset Strip club where she worked as a hostess.

Like O.J., Spector will most likely spend the rest of his life in prison. In any case, the trial is the end of a long psychic free fall.

Spector's life growing up was an absolute tragedy, with his father having committed suicide and his sister having been institutionalized. He suffered from mental illness for decades, but his penchant for guns finally became his downfall.
