At least this guy, unlike most commentators, has actually worked in the field.
Unfortunately for him, the idea of an extra year of schooling for kids, many of whom don't even want to be in school in the first place, is just ridiculous. So is the idea of pushing college when so few occupations even require much education beyond high school. Well, such an idea of increasing enrollment would help the colleges and help create and preserve jobs in that sector, but it wouldn't do the students much good.
The rest of the column is more elitist nonsense. What is needed is more vocational training for high school students instead of putting them on a college track and more support for community colleges for people to learn skilled trades, those jobs that can't be "outsourced" to other countries.
