It is hardly a surprise arts instruction is getting the shaft and students are suffering as a result.
Thanks to NCLB, the big push in public schools is reading and math, with science and social studies relegated to the fringes. Teachers have been reduced to being little more than test proctors, going to grade-level meetings with their colleagues to make sure they are all teaching the same thing at the same time. Only the wealthier schools and school districts bother much with the arts anymore.
