Obituaries

Time for a list for a few deaths happening over the past several days:

Gospel singer Marie Knight, 89, of complications of pneumonia.
_____

Famed jockey Ismael "Milo" Valenzuela, one of the most celebrated jockeys of all time and who rode many famous racehorses including Kelso, after a long illness. He was 74.

He was the jockey aboard Tim Tam, the 1958 Derby and Preakness winner. Tim Tam came in second in the Belmont after breaking a sesamoid in the race and finishing on three legs. Other winners include Forward Pass, the "winner" of the infamous 1968 Kentucky Derby after real winner Dancer's Image was disqualified for having a banned substance in his system. Forward Pass did go on to win the Preakness.

Valenzuela, third of an impressive 22 children, was pretty prolific himself:

Besides his daughter Diana, his survivors include his wife, the former Rose Delia Mendoza; four other children, Ismael Jr., Patricia, Johnny and Richard; 13 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

According to the Los Angeles Times, his wife died ten years ago.

Somebody on YouTube posted a memorial to Milo a few months ago:
