Gee, the "reformers" were so big on "standards" for graduation that more than a few students who met all the requirements for graduation, but couldn't pass the "competency" tests, were denied diplomas and thus couldn't get decent jobs or go to college.
GEDs aren't that highly regarded, but at least one school system is trying to give diplomas "retroactively" to students who were screwed out of them.
Thank God I received my diploma back in the days before "competency exams" were instituted.
