In the End, If By Some Remote Chance

health care "reform" manages to pass both house of Congress, which I doubt, there will still be restrictions on abortion funding.

It's perfectly legal for the federal government to do it; it has done it for 33 years. What Democrats would be foolish to do is risk alienating a key voting bloc--the Catholic vote, which includes millions and millions of Latinos--just because a few "feminist" bloggers are complaining about something they know nothing of what they are talking about.

Years ago, when the Hyde Amendment was proposed, there was a lot of concern over whether poor women would be able to have access to abortions because of their lack of ability to pay; however, this fear hasn't translated into reality. Tens of thousands of poor women would be dead from self-induced abortions or from quacks if that were the case. My belief is many abortion providers, if not most, have some kind of sliding scale depending on the patient's ability to pay. What is a greater concern, of course, is the number of clinics providing abortions. THAT would be a bigger handicap to poor women than whether or not the federal government pays for the procedure.
