The media did this with the Clintons' marriage. The difference here is Michelle has a far lower profile than Hillary Clinton ever did.
I believe this is by design. I don't think Michelle Obama is terribly comfortable being in the limelight, and I also think some of the things she was quoted as saying ("For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am proud of my country," etc.) really mortified her when her words were being used out of context.
She's kept a very low profile ever since. This despite silly articles like this one trying to speculate on the state of the Obama's marriage.
