Gov. Jim Gibbons has asked the school district to prepare scenarios for 10, 15 and 22 percent cuts to education, a sector that he says takes up about 54 percent of the state's general fund along with higher education costs.
For the Washoe County School District, the 10 percent scenario could mean four more students added to each classroom and about 400 teachers could lose their jobs.
“We have no idea what the level of cuts will be,” said school district spokesman Steve Mulvenon. “It is hard to give solid information when we do not know the outcome of the (legislative) special session.”
However, school district chief financial officer Gary Kraemer told school board trustees Tuesday, “We are working in the background on it already. It is not fun stuff.”
There is already declining enrollment because of the numbers of people leaving this state.
