Obituaries

Pundit and writer James J. Kilpatrick, 89, has died of congestive heart failure. He was known as a conservative columnist but who publicly chastised Richard Nixon during the Watergate scandal. Kilpatrick also appeared on 60 Minutes' "Point-Counterpoint" segment opposite Nicholas von Hoffman and later Shana Alexander.

Kilpatrick was known as a good guy regardless of politics. I didn't know he was married to former columnist Marianne Means, who I remember was a liberal columnist.

Means was his second wife. His first wife died in 1997.

I love the "correction" at the end of the Times article.

I missed this in news, sorry to hear of it, but he did live a long life.

The Point-Counter Point segment was always at the conclusion of 60 Minutes with Shana vs James. Shana once admitted their were times that they would agree on a subject, but played devil's advocate and took the standard liberal-conservative positions. Andy Rooney replaced them about 1980 (I think).

But the biggest cultural impact Point-Counter Point had was the parody from the original "Saturday Night Live!" lineup in the mid to late 1970's....it would be Jane Curtain vs Dan Aykroyd in some hysterical comedy.

"Jane, you ignorant slut!" would always be Dan's opening salvo at the "limousine liberal" Curtain.

I remember the parodies of the segment. Of course, the "Point-Counterpoint" segment was a forerunner to the squawk talk programs like "Crossfire."

Somewhere along the line, Kilpatrick, like the late William Safire, got sick of writing about politics and turned to writing about writing.
