regardless of whether it is on the defense or the offense, but in case why is a movement which belongs on the very fringes of humanity--or on another planet--seemingly getting a foothold though most voters seem more sympathetic with traditional liberal or "left" issues?
The answer is obvious: It is because the Democratic Party in particular is too much concerned about making nice with an opposition which has no intention of making nice and is also too concerned about currying favor with the financial elite. There is this gaping hole called the economy and unemployment, and the Democrats don't appear to want to do one damned thing about it, including and especially Obama.
Hence the far right, especially those backed by the likes of the Koch brothers, is exploiting the outrage over the economy.

Dear Susan,
I would agree with you that it is because the Democrats have become 'too concerned about currying favor...' with both the financial and power elite. They have sold out to unions and the AMA, among others, which now run on their own agenda, focus on keeping their own power structure in place, and in short, act like corporations which have lost their soul, their care for those who built them, and are brutally run by economists who consider only the "bottom line" or the power hungry. There is little difference between the parties, other than the particular 'corporations' whose agendas they push. I agree with a statement in the article Brad4d sited, that the two party system could use some major overhaul.
I would disagree that this is all because they are 'playing nice' or that they don't appear to want to do anything about it. Rather, they seem to be doing everything they can, as quickly as they can to destroy the freedoms we have left, freedoms they once defended, and offer them on a silver platter to those whose favor they seek.
The outrage over the economy, from where I sit, does not run nearly as deep as the outrage over the betrayal of our freedoms all in the name of 'freedom'; it is like pouring salt in a wound, and the wounded are beginning to find their voice. I am glad you are finding yours.
Dear Susan (cont)
I was taught that political views are less a straight line, more like a circle. The far left and far right are not at opposite ends of a line, but rather both are opposite the 'center' on a circle. If one put the 'center point of view' at the top point of a circle, both the far left and far right would be at the bottom, nearly touching, on the opposite side of the circle from the "middle ground",and closer together than either would care to admit. I have found that to be true.
Years ago, it was the left that supported the radical ideas of individual choice which included freedom of speech, education, religion and freedom to make ones own health choices, even if they included alternative health care and did not conform to AMA or insurance companies' guidelines. That is no longer true. Now, many of us who have valued these freedoms have taken the rather short step from the far left to the far right, and have found a much more civil, welcoming, supportive environment.
Most of us are not as offensive as you imagine, for many of us have been where you now are, and have taken that short step, for some of the very reasons you site here. When you're ready, I'd encourage you to try it! I'll have a cup of tea waiting for you :)
