I expect him to beat Obama if the latter is actually stupid enough to seek re-election. Despite his somewhat wooden demeanor, Romney isn't as stupid as he looks.
I find him a real threat because I believe he could win in 2012. I don't think his religion, Mormonism, would be a problem at all.

Romney could win. For one thing he is very intelligent. He "acts" dumb to appeal to the right wing crazies but he is not dumb and he is not crazy. Matt Yglesias even voted for him as governor of Mass.
My guess is he is a Rockefeller republican. He is rational. And by all accounts very competent. If he were to get elected though he would have no choice but to pursure far right policies. He would be like Bush Sr. who didn't not believe in any of the crazy right policies but had no choice but to appoint far right judges.
A president can't afford to lose his base. You lose your base and you are toast. Examples; Jimmy Carter, Bush Sr.
If Obama loses his base, probable at this point, he is toast. If Bloomberg runs it is over.
