Noted former Playboy bunny, police officer, convicted killer, and fugitive Laurie "Bambi" Bembenek has died at the age of only 52. She became a folk hero of sorts during her fugitive days and always maintained her innocence in the 1981 killing of Christine Schultz. She died at a Portland, Oregon, hospice center of liver failure.
A good article about her fight to clear her name is here. There was certainly some reasonable doubt in her case.
The Crime Library has more about Bembenek's life, which was the subject of books and movies.
