The Neoliberals

are not in any manner, shape, or form "conservatives" of any kind because they wish to undo decades of reforms, not preserve them.

They are social darwinists. Their twisted belief system is people are rich because they deserve it and are the strongest, while the poor are least deserving and should simply die. There is no reason, in these people's twisted views, for any kind of social programs or any kind of social contract.

It is madness.

Neoliberalism is to blame for pretty much all of our problems as a nation. Like most fascist movements, neoliberalism clothes itself in the rhetoric of a return to old-fashioned values. What it really is is a radical and revolutionary force that has dismantled the modest protections of the New Deal and Great Society. As one of my favorites, Chris Hedges, has stated, we have been subject to a slow corporate coup that has taken place over the past 30-40 years. There could be no other way but coup, since neoliberalism is so anathema to actual American values.

Look at what they did to Thomas Jefferson. They have distorted his memory to the point where middle American yahoos think he was a gun-toting, free-market capitalist. Surely we know TJ was no saint but a man whose ultimate vision was to give equal amounts of free government land and schooling to everyone in hopes that the state would wither away sounds more like Karl Marx than Karl Rove.

The key to this extremist ideology's success is propaganda. The neolibs couch their anti-American rhetoric by trying to pretend to stand up for those "traditional values" which you mentioned in your post. I also think the ditching of the Fairness Doctrine and the deregulation of the media have a lot to do with its success.

People are now so brainwashed they have come to believe all of the institutions which have made this country great are somehow subversive.

Neoliberalism is a truly sick concept. Unfortunately, both political parties are under its thrall.
