Dr. Heath Morrison got the award even though he hasn't done anything positive for Washoe County School District and instead has put in layer after layer of bureaucracy and has put in "reforms" destined to demonize teachers. The district, already a corrupt, inept mess when he took over, is even more so now.
“Despite the fact that Nevada’s once-booming economy has been in steep decline, Heath has led his community in the development of a district-wide five-year strategic plan to ensure that every child receives a high-quality education and graduates from high school ready for college or a career,” said Daniel Domenech, AASA executive director. “Already, the district is seeing results. We can learn from his success.”
Morrison has been superintendent for Washoe County School District since 2009.
Let's see: This guy hasn't even been a real school district superintendent three years and only taught for four years, yet he surpasses better and more experienced finalists.
I see this as completely political. Somebody powerful pulled strings for him, including Governor Sandoval and Senator Reid. I suspect they felt pushing this neophyte into a national award would somehow boost Nevada's battered image and economy.
I can tell you from my experience and observation Morrison is no better than previous sup Paul Dugan, and he is just as devious as any of the administrators I dealt with there. It's all about his ego, his PR, and to hell what people need to know or what is right.
This award is an epic "fail." The only good that could possibly come out of it is Morrison gets an even cushier job with the Department of Education or the Gates Foundation and makes room for someone who actually gives a shit about students and teachers. This guy is all about the image.
