in the so-called "surge" of out-of-wedlock births for the under-30 crowd.
In the "good old days" of the 1950s and early sixties, many, many shotgun marriages resulted when the female got pregnant. I suspect many of the women who do have children out of wedlock these days are living with and will eventually marry the fathers.
The article points out to economic factors for people not getting married, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense when two incomes are always cheaper than one, assuming both parties are working.
There is a touch of garbage in the article which promotes the idea a safety net for the poor "encourages" out-of-wedlock births and "dependency." Since the benefits are meager, that old chestnut needs to be thrown in the trash where it belongs.
