The guy was ethical and quit his job after publicly admitting to the relationship. That's more than most will do.
They'll probably end up getting married and living happily ever after.

The blunt truth is the ONLY advantage of being married to being single is the second income. It is significant as it buffers people when economic crises hit. It's damned hard to survive when one is sole support, especially if when one has his or her career taken away from him or her unjustly and cannot get hired in full-time work thanks to age discrimination:
William H. Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution, warns that many unmarried baby boomers will confront greater economic hardships than their married parents and grandparents, and their married counterparts. Many members of this generation, which has been battered by the recession, have fewer children and thinner financial cushions in savings and pensions.
You can thank the fuckers in Congress who put through policies which discouraged true pensions and allowed millions of jobs to be outsourced to cheap labor countries.
Furthermore, who in the hell would want to find a spouse at retirement or near-retirement age? A second income may be a poor trade for having to take care of somebody when he or she becomes sick.
My niece is going through this now with her husband, who is terminally ill with lung cancer though he has been hanging tough through this ordeal. He's 70, and she is 53. Not a good way to spend your middle and golden years.
