Opening statements in the Dana Chandler case began today:
Gasoline consumption for the Mitsubishi automobile driven by Dana L. Chandler matched the distance for a round trip from Denver to Topeka in July 2002, when Chandler’s ex-husband and fiance were shot 11 times in a southwest Topeka home, a prosecutor said in opening statements Thursday.
The gas consumption in Chandler’s car didn’t match Chandler’s version of a weekend trip she said she took from her home in Denver that wound through the Colorado mountains west and north of her home, chief deputy district attorney Jacqie Spradling said.
She is guilty as sin, but the only question is whether the jury can put all of the pieces together.
The gas consumption would be impossible for the defense to overcome with no explanation and would alone convict somebody of murder absent any alibi whatsoever. Chandler had the means and the motive to do it. She has no alibi, and she has told different stories over the years of where she was the day and evening of the murders.
