My comment of this article:
This is all about saving money by getting rid of higher-paid teachers. Until you have taught and have been through one of these sham tribunals, you are not really qualified to talk about them.
"Tenure" isn't a right to a lifetime job in K-12 unlike colleges and universities; it is actually misnamed. Police and fire personnel have the same rights as teachers, and all are governed by administrative law. All "tenure" is in public employment is the right to a sham hearing. BTW, the rules and procedures that go on in regular legal proceedings don't apply here. Districts can make up allegations, put in false documents, destroy documents, suborn perjury of witnesses, bribe witnesses, and collude with unions/associations and their law firms to get rid of teachers they don't want. Administrators have unbelievable power and job security in this field--it is almost impossible to remove a principal and most are terrible, unfortunately.
So why have "tenure"? Because it puts a brake on administrators' worst impulses to get rid of people they don't want and saves school districts and their insurance companies money on lawsuits. Without it, kids would be deprived of outstanding teachers or any kind of stable education environment if it is a revolving door. Education isn't like private business. What is needed is a revamp of administrative law so that it is a lot more fair to teachers.
Of course, many of the comments following this article about a persecuted teacher repeat the same hogwash they have heard from the media.
