The National Anthem

has always been criticized for its unsingable melody and its lyrics. Lots and lots of people hate it and are perfectly patriotic. Francis Scott Key, the composer, actually ripped off the melody from To Anacreon in Heaven, a song with some rather bawdy lyrics although not originally intended to be a drinking song, as widely claimed. It might as well be given how awful the melody is.

Anyway, the right, always engaging in paranoia and projection, went after pundit Bill Press the other day for daring to suggest that perhaps another new anthem is needed. I prefer "Stars and Stripes Forever," which isn't known for its lyrics, but the melody is rousing and great. You don't need to have lyrics anyway although it would certainly change sporting events if it were the national anthem.
