She’s on track in assuming age plays a factor.
The overall unemployment rate is higher for younger, inexperienced workers: 3.4 million people ages 16-24 were unemployed in May compared with 1.9 million people ages 55 and older. But after the older demographic becomes unemployed, it’s much more difficult for them to secure another spot in the workforce.
On average, unemployed people in the 55-plus age group are without work for 56 weeks, compared with 26 weeks for unemployed people ages 16-24, according to recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
And after employers see a two- or three-year gap in a work history, regardless of how hard the person has hunted for a job and regardless of their qualifications, it raises a red flag.
And employers are full of shit.
