The National Climatic Data Center reported that nearly 1,600 record high temperatures had been broken in the last week of June. Friday was the hottest day on record for many towns, and it is just the beginning of the summer season. Nashville, Tennessee and Columbia, South Carolina reached 109 degrees; Washington, DC registered 104, breaking the previous record by two degrees.
