As I've written before, ALL online K-12 schools getting public money need to be banned. Distance learning should be ONLY for rural students or credit recovery and under the supervision of public school districts.

I missed this obituary, and I should have seen it: Trainer Frank "Pancho" Martin, a man who will always be remembered for having trained Sham (pictured) to be the sacrificial lamb to the mighty Secretariat in the 1973 Triple Crown series, has died at the age of 86:
Martin trained two champions with Autobiography in 1972 and Outstandingly in 1984. Autobiography won the championship for Older Horses after winning the two-mile Jockey Club Gold Cup by 15 lengths defeating Key to the Mint and the Kentucky Derby winner Riva Ridge. An Eclipse Award went to Outstandingly based on her wins in the 1984 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Filly by disqualification and the Hollywood Starlet.

He was not depicted too well in the movie Secretariat.
Martin was inducted into racing's Hall of Fame in 1981.
NYRA obit:
Behind a gruff exterior, Martin was as well-known on the backstretch for his generosity as his horsemanship._____
“He was difficult to get along with, but he had a good heart,” said Cordero. “If you needed money [he’d give you some]. He bought a restaurant, and he didn’t let anybody pay for one year, and then he had to sell it. I asked him, ‘How are you going to have a restaurant if you don’t have anybody pay?’ ‘He said, ‘When I retire, I’ll get rid of it.’ That’s how good of a person he was. If you needed $100, he’d give it to you. He was tough when he got beat, but you got used to it. One day I asked him, ‘Why do you get so mad [when you lose]?’ He said, ‘You show me a guy who gets beat a lot and I’ll show you a lollipop.’ Even though he had a temper, everyone knew he was a good trainer. Everybody respected him and called him ‘Mr. Martin.’”
